Polyester
A fabric that today dominates the fashion industry, polyester is spun from synthetic or plastic fibres. Understandably, there are increasing concerns for its negative environmental and social impacts.
At Witchery, we use polyester for its many design advantages including silky texture and appearance, excellent colour fastness to ensure long-lasting colour, to perfecting pleating in designs. Customers like you, enjoy the benefits of its easy-to-care nature, being wrinkle and shrinkage-resistant, moisture-wicking and fast drying.
Despite their design and care benefits, the very fact that polyester’s synthetic fibres are in part, derived from petroleum and crude oil, means they are not biodegradable and intrinsically harmful to the environment and climate.
Recycled Polyster
The growing concern around synthetic fabrics has seen the development and introduction of recycled polyester into the fashion industry. Like traditional polyester, recycled polyester is still a man-made fabric but crafted from existing plastics like drink bottles, industrial waste and even used garments. As a result, recycled polyester reduces water, energy usage and CO2 emissions in production. Giving new life to plastics otherwise destined to be discarded, recycled polyester ultimately reduces plastic waste that would otherwise end up in our oceans or landfill.
The final fabric holds the same benefits of virgin polyester, being strong, long-lasting, wrinkle-resistant, with the potential to be recycled again.
In 2020, we are proud to introduce our recycled polyester pieces as an alternative.
